Life cycle assessment of Biobased fertilisers and pesticides
The objective of this task is to conduct a comprehensive life cycle analysis of biobased fertilisers and
pesticides and compare them to the conventional fossil-based products. Life Cycle Assessment involves analysis of all environmental impacts such as greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or environmental contamination throughout the fertilizer production, application and post-application
stages. Fossil-based fertilizers are known for high impacts on GHG emissions, whereas organic fertilizers have the potential in increasing eutrophication and acidification, due to a larger quantity of organic matter volatilising shortly after land spreading.
The aim of this task is to identify environmental impacts as a result of shifting from fossil-based to biobased fertilizers in order to avoid ‘burden shifting’ from one impact to the next.
